Oyster Catcher
It's funny how the birds are more patient with boats than people on foot.
Species: Haematopus bachmani (Black Oystercatcher)

This photo was taken off the side of the water dock. The white Anenome in the middle are Plumos Aneome (not the Giant one). The tube worms (red and white colors) have a hard calcium tube they can retreat into.

Orange Abalone
These were harvested until they were threatened in BC. They have come back well in this Haida Gwaii, but you still can't harvest them here. Even taking a washed up shell home is could get questions from DFO.
Species: Haliotis kamtschatkana (pinto abalone, Northern abalone, Japanese abalone)

Ochre Sea Star Showing Size
Ochre Sea Stars weren't that common. They are quite a bit larger than the bat stars.

Orange Sea Cucumbers
There is a lot going on here. You can see some sea cucumber bodies. You can see the brown and orange versions of these animals. There are two rock scallops in this photo and two urchins.
Species: Cucumaria miniata (Red Sea Cucumber)

Sea Urchin Barrens
The Sea Urchins used to be kept in check by sea otters. Now there are so many they have eaten almost all of their primary food (kelp) on the lower parts of the bottom. The Sea Urchins now come out of the water to eat the highest growing kelps.
Species: Strongylocentrotus franciscanus (Red Sea Urchin)

Tangled Jellyfish
I don't know how the jellyfish separate themselves.

Blood Star With Purple Sea Urchins
I'm surprised to see the purple sea urchins out like this - I'm used to them tightly packed into cracks in the rocks.
Species: Henricia leviuscula (Blood Star), Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (Purple Sea Urchin)

Sea Urchin Barrons
Haida Gwaii has a sea urchin problem - their primary predator (Sea Otter) was hunted to extinction. There has been a few sightings of sea otters at the Southernmost tip of Haida Gwaii, but it's often lone males that colonize a place first so it it may be a while before a real population takes hold.
