Walking By With My Buffalo
Most recent comment: Monday, July 20th, 2009 at 02:46:59
Is this poverty porn? I really think it's neat that a kid can walk around with a water buffalo. The grubby clothes? What can I say?
Just say that you are blessed to have lived a better life. Those poor kids, love them.

Fish Monger
Most recent comment: Monday, July 20th, 2009 at 02:46:49
The fish here made me sad - the presentation doesn't give you the sense that this person really cares about the fish. We aren't anywhere near the ocean so I suspect much of this is freshwater fish.
They are fish from the river, not from the ocean. They are fresh and ... freshy bloody, though.

Family Of Mallard Chicks

Family Of Mallard Chicks
The photograph of a female Mallard and her young taken at Stanley Park has brought me great joy. I live next to the River Bourne in South Wiltshire but thanks to an unthinking parish council and residents who care little about the environment and preserving wildlife habitat, young Mallards are becoming a thing of the past in this area. Too many planning applications are allowed which permit the destruction of wildife habitat near rivers and the opening up of woodland areas alongside rivers in which the public exercise their dogs, only leads to wildlife being driven out of our villages. What a sad day it will be when there are no longer any ducks for grandparents to take their grandchildren to feed!

This is one of the palm trees that line the pool. That's the Pacific Ocean (looking west) just below the near constant haze.

Turns out there are up to 5 species of Horsetail that this could be and unless I go back and squeeze the stalk, it's ambiguous.

Ice Climbing at Upper Johnson Falls
Most recent comment: Wednesday, April 29th, 2009 at 06:19:54
I think the start of climbs are particularly challenging because most of the climbers were hung up at this level. (Johnson Canyon, Banff National Partk)
It looks hard climbing up the johnson falls

Yet another red berry. I have no idea how plants expected animals to keep this all straight.
is that edible?
jaley Sunday, April 19th, 2009 at 14:49:14
This is a watermelon berry and yes it is edible. They are very juicy but don't have much of a taste.

Puerto Rican Crested Anole From Behind
Most recent comment: Monday, April 20th, 2009 at 15:11:16
Hate it when you don't get the eyes focused. You can tell from the largest image that this is crop. I used to think this was a Gecko (Tropics right?) but turns out it isn't even close.
Hi!
I was wondering if you knew what type of gecko this was? I would really appreciate it if you could tell me, I have one that came home with me by accident in my suitcase!
Knowing what kind of gecko it is would really help me know how to take care of it! :)
Thanks so much!

Saltwater Marsh
Most recent comment: Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 at 03:13:04
Apparently these salt water marshes are great habitat for birds and other wildlife.
Does the salt water marsh have decomposing stuff? And does it only cordgrass?
Nicole solanki Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 at 18:20:34
You need to have the depth of the salt water marsh. I need it
Michael Shmithorst Friday, October 23rd, 2009 at 11:23:45
The marsh is a tidal estuary - it almost completely drains at low tide and is perhaps 3 feet deep at the deepest point at high tide - depends on the tides though.

Plants Growing Out Of Building
Most recent comment: Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 at 01:40:15
My Aunt (in law) said this building probably hasn't been maintained since world war 2.
Your Aunt is probably right. I can tell the building hasn't been maintained for several decades due to the algae on the green pipe and more importantly the plantations growing through the concrete leading to a rather terrible aesthetic.
The core properties of the concrete have diminished over the years and with little or no maintenance it's resulted in the concrete obosorbing the rain water leading to plants, algae and cement residue (now a dark brown powder) all over the external elevation.

Log Loading Thing
Most recent comment: Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 at 05:15:21
I think this helped unload the logs, but I really don't know.
they would put the logs down onto the cables making the bunks stand up on the right that are laying down. then they would strap them together then push the budle into the water to be sent downstrem tto the mill.

Walking Stick Bug
Most recent comment: Thursday, March 19th, 2009 at 01:25:48
Apparently there are about 2500 species of walking stick insects so the chance of me identifying this one is about zero.
Beautiful picture that has been taken here. I really do love all of your work. These pictures are definitely one of a kind masterpieces. I do photography myself, so I know what you're going through to take these pictures. Keep it up.
Sincerely,
Anonymous

That species is from the genus Pseudophasma. Difficult to know more about the exact species only with a picture...
Best regards.

Sea Asparagus
Most recent comment: Thursday, March 12th, 2009 at 15:10:25
This is one of my favorite plants because it's super easy to identify and you can eat it! I've seen it for sale on Granville Island and it certainly isn't cheap.
I have a reference query as to whether sea asparagus can be cultivated - does anyone know?

Most recent comment: Thursday, March 12th, 2009 at 15:10:15
I love how simple the composition here and how it has two different frequencies (the soft horizon with the sharp grasses).
Lot of nice photos in this set. Love the simple and the subtle. Got here through google images looking for lupines.

Coming into Namu
Most recent comment: Saturday, February 14th, 2009 at 23:48:36
It was a raining morning when we spotted Namu.
I was born in Bella Bella in 1960 and lived in Namu until 1967 after that we returned every summer until 1970. I have some old movie clips from that time also old picture when the plant was running full time
