Mountains at Sunset
Most recent comment: Monday, December 25th, 2006 at 17:41:20
We were out fishing and the sun set. Who knew? I've looked at the Topo maps and the geographical database online and none of these mountains have names.
Loved the shots of Ocean Falls. I'm an (Van) Islander stuck in yucky Ottawa for the last 8 years (3 to go until retirement) so it's always good to see photos of the coast.

Enjoyed your pics very much. Lived in Ocean Falls and we used to use a cottage in Wallace Bay and can't get over the destruction and mess that has been left at Jenny Bay. Many fond memories of boating weekends there & back and how beautiful and natural everything was.

Loved these photos of Ocean Falls. I lived there in the mid-fifties when my stepfather was a forest ranger there. Town was in full swing then (as far as I recall). --from Virginia, USA 3/2011

Rain Storms On The Ocean
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful photos. I feel like I could step in the picture, taste the salt on my lips and feel the wind whip my hair around my face. The wetness of the rain soaked wind is almost tangeable when I look at this. Bless you!

Giant Green Anemone

These aren't as tolerant of drying out as the smaller Aggregate Green Anemone so you have to shoot through more water to see them.
I think this website is great but mabe u should explain what some of the words mean!!!!!!!!!

Pond
John,
I just wanted to thank you for these great photographs. So many fond memories were rekindled in viewing Hatley Castle and the grounds. I grew up as an army brat playing and fishing here. My brother once fell into this pond while on a fishing escapade! He was attempting to place worm on my hook when I moved my rod making him jump just a little too far backward. Now that I am thinking about it, I do not recall if we were actually allowed to be fishing there. Anyhow, beautiful photos. Keep up the great work.
Sincerely,
Steve Norman.

It's hard to do this justice. There are abondonded cars parked near by and the steaples are starting to bend over. The perspective is messed up by the wide angle.
Hello my name is Sarah Joyce and this church was build in my mothers home town of Skookumchuck, B.C. and also it was partly built by my Grandfather Jacob Peters
yeah i grew up here, There is a book out right now called Spirit of the Land check it out it's by Sharon Syrette and Yvonne Peters amaliiasos@gmail.com is the email addy of the authors.

I used to live right across from it and its nice to see it again.
Krystal Thursday, March 19th, 2009 at 14:32:57
Great to see your interest in the Church, a national historic site. Some restoration work was done with a new foundation in 2009; a documentary Saving Places, filmed by PTV Productions for the History Channel is available. Please visit our website for more details and update on the Church conservation efforts. Anything that you can do to help, to spread the word, etc. - we really need and appreciate donations of any size, from anyone interesting in preserving this unique spiritual place.

Artic Lupine - Lupinus arcticus
Most recent comment: Monday, December 25th, 2006 at 17:38:55
The purple flowers are Artic Lupine - Lupinus arcticus.
The Arctic Lupine are such beautiful plants, but can be very poisonous. They were used in hay for animals such as goats, and if the plant was poisonous this would cause deformation of the production of the young. Thus, way back this plant was used as a cure for women, which could also cause deformation in the baby when in birth, if the plant was poisonous. I find this information fascinating !!!!!!

Mungo Martin's Totem
Most recent comment: Monday, December 25th, 2006 at 17:37:21
The totem on the right is written up in Hillary Stewart's book - The pole was carved by Henry Hunt and Tony Hunt in 1970 as a memorial for Mungo Martin. Mungo Martin is one of the hero's in the Kwakiutal society - he was a prolific totem carver and one of the important links that brough the traditional artistic skills and knowledge out of the banned pot latch era. This totem pole was the first totem raised in Alert bay in 40 years. The top figure is Kolus (the crest of Mungo's father from Gilford Island) followed by Cedar Man with a talking stick. The second from bottom figure is Raven caved in memory of David Martin. The bottom figure is Dzunukwa, the crest of Mungo's wife Abaya'a. The pole on the left (Thunderbird, Bear holding a whale's tail, Raven, Whale, Dzunukwa) was carved by Charlie James as a memorial for Amos Dawson's uncle.

Yellow Monkey Flower
where do they grow?
niki Friday, December 1st, 2006 at 10:36:10
Really, really wet spots. This one was growing where a stream went over a rock outcropping just by the sea shore. I've also seen this flower growing in alpine creeks. This plant seems to be almost an aquatic.

Anemone And Mussels
Most recent comment: Monday, December 25th, 2006 at 17:26:12
That's a giant (or in this case not so giant) green anemone.
Excuse my english, i speak french, from Québec.
You took a excellent sample of pictures of marine life at low tide.
I'm fascinated by the botanical beach of Pacific, because i live at the east of Canada, just 4000 Km eastern... Your pictures are dated of 2003. Now with the numeric photographs, you can take some hundreds of that. Me, i did the same work in eastern Québec (Gaspésie), and on the coast of Maine in many state parks. I took a very big lot of pictures of Atlantic botanical beach, closer pictures. If you live near the Pacific coast, i wish to exchange more numeric pictures between Atlantic and Pacific. It's like two different worlds of marine life, and i search the common and different species for both oceans. If you are interrested to exchange photographs, you have my address. Have a good day !

Sadako's Paper Cranes
Most recent comment: Monday, December 25th, 2006 at 17:25:36
There was a large display discussing the life of Sadako - a young girl in Hiroshima who developed and died of cancer years after the blast. She believed that folding 1000 paper cranes would get her wish granted and the museum included some of the ones she folded. Because paper was scarce at the time, the cranes are made out of a variety of materials, and some are very small.
i think that it is horible that so many died.sometimes i think about sadakoand remember how she never gave up hope.i always think about her at a track meet.

Buildings in Ocean Falls
Most recent comment: Monday, December 25th, 2006 at 17:25:20
The closest building is now a lodge but I believe it used to be a telecom building or a bank. The buildings behind it used to be apartments and a hotel but now they are abandoned.
The building was a CIBC Bank
The lodge is up for sdale for $500,000
Philip Sunday, December 17th, 2006 at 08:03:47
I lived and worked in Ocean falls for almost 4 years in the early 70's. In both the Machine Room which is where the actual paper making operation was, and in the Yard Auto Pool, driving various pieces of machinery and Dump Trucks. I was also on the townsite and industrial Fire Dept's. My son was conceived here. I owned a house in Martin Valley.
Ken Harris Friday, January 30th, 2009 at 00:21:45
lived in ocean falls 74-80. The town looks real different from when i left and almost gone. miss the old town.
kenneth kruger Saturday, February 13th, 2010 at 19:57:08
I lived in Ocean Falls from 1957-61 where I started grade 1. It was my father's first posting as a Forest Ranger. On Halloween the whole town lined up along the boardwalk to watch fireworks off the tugboats. We walked up to the dam above town, to picnic and swim below the floodgates, terrified it would open any minute. We lived in the first floor of the Maple Apartments near the big hotel which caught fire, and beside Mr. Mawn's, the Pawnbroker.

Im well over fifty years old now and havent been to lake louise since i was 11 or12 yrs old.I still remember that beautiful water and those amazing colors in the shadows of the hills and the mirroring of the sky. Your girl in thr photo? daughter, wife,or girlfriend? whoever she is,she looks to be a nice lass. She should not ever forget to visit these places often. They wont be here one of these days if people treat the world as they have been doing. Bye Bye...E.
