Beam Of Light From Ceiling

On the way in, we didn't see this spectacular display of light - on the way out the sun had changed position and we were treated.

John Harvey, I love this picture. I'm a teacher and I would like to have your permission to use this image in one of my powerpoint presentations. Regards, Matt

Esso Fuel Pump in the General Store
Most recent comment: Saturday, October 28th, 2006 at 17:24:39

I don't really know why this gas pump is here - it might have been for fueling small boats.

I have the identical pump at my home and would like to know if you have any information as to its age.

Deer Ferns

I believe this a Deer Fern or Blechnum Spicant. The leaves on the ground are sterile and the leaves that grow from the center are fertile.

Sail Jellyfish
Most recent comment: Sunday, October 15th, 2006 at 22:19:24
These were washed up in great numbers (>100) in some places.
Species: Velella velella (Sail Jellyfish, By-the-wind sailor)

I have just returned from a fishing trip in Ireland where we fished the surf for Bass at St Finans/Finians Bay Kerry. I saw hundreds of sail jellyfish on the surf - amazing creatures - travelling almost too fast to catch in the hand. Even when turned over by a wave they would soon right themselves and carry on. Some even appeared to turn themselves around to steer away from the shore, perhaps by dropping some of the frill of tentacles beneath to cause resistance while the wind pushed the opposite end around. The strong wind and current coupled with weed in the tide made fishing very difficult but these colourful little jellies made my day. AL.

Interesting shot. I just returned for a few days at Pacifica, CA, USA, where indeed hundreds were on the beach. According to one local, it happens about twice a year. I had seen them once before. Went on the computer to see if I could identify, and found this - exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. My shots are all on the beach.

I saw these recently in Pacifica, CA too, thousands of them washed ashore one morning in May 2007. That afternoon they looked like dried leaves. But the curious thing was that there were all these dead ladybugs near them in the morning. I wondered if the ladybugs were attracted to the velelle, and then got stung and died. I have no idea, but that was my guess. I wasn't sure why so many velelle had washed ashore. it was a pretty amazing sight.

Me and my father saw them on the west coast of vancouver island, Canada 20miles off shore of nootka island, 5miles from Banjo reef. There where hundreds of them and at firt we thought that it was flower petals floating. It was a windy day about 25-35mile an hour winds and then floated like minnie sail boats. Ive have seen many things on the west coast but nothing ever like this. This was about August 20 2007

We saw these little creatures recently in Bandon, Oregon on the beach. They had washed up after the storms. My kids loved looking at them on the sand, but I bet they are more beautiful swimming live.

I recently went to Pacifica and found three jellyfish that I assumed to be sail jellyfish. However, the ones that I found did not have the blue along the bottom. I was planning on doing a report about these jellyfish, yet I do not know for certain if they are sail jellyfish. Were the ones that I found female sail jellyfish, or a completely different species?

Kayaking around the coast and encountered thousands of these in the water between Seaton and Looe in Cornwall today (23/05/09). A fantastic sight - they look like bubbles on the water until you get close enough to see the sails - and such a beautiful colour.

Glad to have found this site. Sailing between Menorca and Sardinia on the 10th -12th June 2009 we encountered a continuous carpet of these mysterious creatures. We have never seen anything like it before. The density was about 10 or more per square metre. Not knowing what they were thought they could be an alien attack! Do they sting and who eats them?

Wow! I saw some of these during spring break in early april at cocoa beach florida! I'm so glad I know what they are now, because I didn't really wan't to go in the water if they were poisonous. I saw many along the shore but none in the water, alive at least. From what it sounds like, these jellies are harmless. Hey guess what? I am only 11 years old. Anyway, I was curious and kept trying to find out what they were online, and finally I typed in sail jellyfish because it looked like they had sails, and it worked. Thanks!

I was reading a book about people exploring on the beaches of Mexico and they saw jellyfish. This reminded me of a fishing trip to the Revilla Gigedos Islands, Mexico in June, 2007 (these islands are very remote, being 400 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico). We were tuna fishing off Clarion Island and saw these "Sail Jellyfish" by the thousands. Someone above had it about right, 10 per square meter. They were fascinating to watch as they moved with the speed of the wind. Fascinating.

What amazing little jellyfish, we found just 3 today on Shell Island Beach in North Wales UK, and wondered what on earth they were. Good old Google, where would the world be with out you. All the info, texts, photos, and now we know all about them! still amazed at the perfect little things, coloured such incredible shades of iridescent blue.

Hundreds of these were washed up at Gold Beach, Oregon after a storm today, 7/23/2014. My dog ate several of them before I could stop him. He seems fine. I was glad to read that they are harmless. What beautiful little jellyfish. They definitely look like "sails" so you can see how they got their name.

August 04, 2014: Just stumbled on thousands of these washing-up on the very sandy shores of Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park (West coast of Vancouver Island, Canada). Fascinating creatures that we had never seen previously nor had ever heard of them showing-up in this location before. They were also accompanied by sporadic globules of some other form of clear gelatinous formation, most about the size of a large marble or agate. Glad to have found this site with many other varied accounts.

Amazed and awed at seeing these sail fish at La Jolla Shores, La Jolla CA. A man told my daughter and me that he learned about them years ago in an Oceanography class and hasn't seen them ever here. We also saw miniture 1/4 in across silver dollars- again I have never seen in the 30 years I have been going to La Jolla Shores. What a beautiful world we live in- each day brings something new! It was my daughter Jamie's birthday, so it made it another perfect day for us.

We saw literally hundreds of these sail jellyfish on the beach in San Simeon, CA today! Thank you for your picture, I took pics of them and was thinking they were some sort of jellyfish so I started looking them up and found your picture and this site. This really helps explain them, thank you! But I was wondering if when they are alive, do they sting like regular jellyfish? The ones we found seemed already dead.

A wonderful day to everybody. Yesterday we saw also hundreds of them, after low tide at Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - Indian Ocean.

Back in the day (Kamakura Period 1192-1333AD), apparently the Yabusame Archers had humans hold the targets. Notice there is only one level - good enough, not the bulls eye we see.

That would be grousome if it went threw the target and into the human body

This is the view from the Zodiak as we pull around to Elcho Harbour where the

is where we pulled the Zodiak in and where the Petroglyph is.  The marker is on the hill
and the carving is in the rock bluff on the right.

Copyright is a big area and I'm not a lawyer. While I am not surrendering any rights (except perhaps the right of exclusive use, but that's not a right, that's a contract term), I am granting you the right to use my images as you see fit in your applications. While I could adopt a specific license (GPL or Creative Commons) so far, I'm just roughly in the spirit of those licenses. I'm taking a leap here that given a chance, people will mostly do the right thing. So far, it's worked out pretty well.

Justin With Heat Rash

People: Justin

This may not be the place to ask..but im going to anyway. I was searching through the internet to figure out what kind of rash my baby has. This is how I came upon your site. The rash that your son had looks exactly like my sons. I was wondering if you had to get any medical treatment for his heat rash, and how long it lasted. My son has had this rash for several weeks, which it barely clears up and comes back. my Son doesnt seemed to be bothered by it. It flares up when he lays against anything (like my shirt) and will lighten after laying without clothes on for a while. sound familiar?
Danyelle
Sunday, September 3rd, 2006 at 20:32:44

Your son may have Fifth's disease (Erythema Infectiosum)It will fade and then come back during periods of emotional stress (crying) or when the child gets warm or is out in the sun. For most this is very benign and causes little problems. Generally it starts with a slapped cheek appearance of the cheeks. Followed by the rash. Sometimes there is slight fever and a feeling of malaise.
anna
Wednesday, September 6th, 2006 at 19:21:51

Dear Danyelle, Did you ever find out what your son's condition was? My son has the same thing just on his chest area though. I took him to doctors and she wasn't sure either. He had it for about a week and it was gone for about a week and it flared up again. He doesn't seem to be bothered by it, but i am. What to do?

Hi my name is Chelsea. im allergic to temperature change, mainly heat. ive had it my whole life. i break out in hives when my body raises in temperature.. whether its due to exercise, spicy foods, or just laying out in the sun. its completly harmless yet very itchy. and i have to say in high school i was quite embarressed, i break out in hives ALL over my body, sometimes even the roof of my mouth or even my eyes itch. i havent been to alot of drs about it because they all have told me the same thing, take benadryl. but really..its not worth it. by the time i sit down and cool off..the allergic reaction is gone. i hope im of help to yall. i have never met someone with the same allergic reaction as me, yet similiar, i once met a boy who was allergic to cold. i replyed to your bulletin because your sons hives look very much soo like mine do. if it helps any i was told by a dr years ago that its very common for babies to be allergic to heat yet it may fade wwith age, unfortunatly mine didnt, im 19. but theres hope.

It is impossible to diagnose something over the internet. This could be as simple as 'contact dermatitis' due to a soap or detergent. Cocamide DEA is a commonly used element in shampoo and liquid soap. I am allergic to it and goat a rash from a body wash I used. See an allergist, that's my recommendation. Allergies untreated can get worse, histamine reactions gets more severe over time as the body tries to compensate. I know a great allergist, Dr. Arthur Biedermann, Allergy Associates.

HI I have this rash and I am not sure if it is a heat rash. It is everywhere on my stomach, upper legs, back, amrs, hands, and other places. I have no idea what it is it looks very much like your son's rash. I am 14 years old and I am worried. It could be an allergic reaction but i haven't put my finger on it yet. And the worst part is i am in crutches. I hyperextended my leg. (bent it the wrong way)

Hello, I have exactly the same as Chelsea. It is started when I was about 22-23. That time it was not bad. Only extreme overheating would cause the redness. No itching. After that it was getting worse. Now I am 30. I get red and itchy skin in 1 minute of exercising. And then I have to cool down for 20-30 minutes before it will go away. The doctors I visited were useless. I tried several antihistamine medications. The one that helped with itching only is cetirizin (for example Zytrec). Also I found that if I exercise every day, then I get less and less of the problem every day. But if I stop for a day or two it all comes back. Here is the article that might help a little bit http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/sun-heat-allergies.html Good luck and health to all.

Everyone who has this persistent rash should get checked for food allergies. My daughter has had eczema and rashes sporadically for 7 years, and it turns out she is probably gluten-intolerant (and can't have wheat, etc.).

My daughter is a month old and has this same rash... the dr. said it is an allergy to the detergent and sais use dreft, but dreft is expensive and we are already using a free and clear detergent. Besides, in the case of my daughter it is mostly on her face and neck and chest, all places where she contacts my skin. If it was from her clothes she would have it everywhere her clothes tough. I am thinking it is an allergy to my body wash, I am going to try and switch to a differnt one.

I have the same rash as Chelsea, I went to a few Drs and yet no one was able to diagnose what it is. I usually get the rashes in the summer or when my temperature rises. I tried cortisone and that seems to help, but to tell you the truth, a cold shower or dip in the pool works better. I guess is common, but it does a number on your self steam. I had it since I was 17-18 and now I am 34. The only thing that bothers me is when I am out in public. The other day, I went to a physical therapist, and she would not touch me because she wasn't sure if I was contagious. People sometimes are cruel. But the rash is harmless.

Wow! It is great to have so many people talking about the same thing. My youngest son is 4 weeks old today and he gets this rash constantly. It is really hot where we live but he even gets it when he is cool. I have found, like Jill, that it is with skin contact; mostly mine. I too, was wondering if it is my body wash. We already use dreft and my diet, as I am breastfeeding, has been very healthy. I dont know what else it could be besides body wash or heat rash. Hmmmmm? Any other ideas or confirmations? Jill did the change in body wash help?

My Baby is just an month old, we leave in Las Vegas, 110 degrees average for summer season. My baby has a litte bit in her face, and more in her back near sholders. I was told it could be heat rashes, and It looks like Justin's rashes! I just hope it is, cause I also was told she might have food allergies! That is hard to deal with!

Hi! My baby is always getting heat rashes. I rub calamine lotion on her to get it to stop irritating her back. If I wash the area first with antibacterial soap, lotion it up with baby lotion, then keep her in a thin t shirt and make sure she doesn't get too warm when she sleeps, it gets better after a week or so. I continued keeping her in the thin t shirts and she hasn't had a heat rash all summer. Good luck!

Hi, was hoping that someone could tell me if their baby gets heat rash in winter? I live in Melbourne Australia and it's the end of winter and I think my baby has heat rash....it looks like Justin's rash...he's 6 weeks old. The doctor assumes that it's the heat rash.

My son suddenly broke out in hives, which brought me here. Although I know this is not the topic, I thought that I would share the fact that I am allergic to cold (and I live in Minnesota!!). it is extremely hard to do anything outdoors in the winter and often even fall and spring. I get large, itchy hives all over, especially in my thighs, upper arms and neck. It is helpful to read that others have similar allergies. I am fearful that mu son may develop this too, which is quite scary.

Hi my daughter is 6 weeks old and has had a very similiar rash. It is mostly on her face and chest area not on her arms or legs but living in a humid area she is just in little body suits or just a singlet and nappy most of the time. It has been persisitant for about 2 weeks now and doesn't seem to be going away. It seems to flare up if she gets hot or upset. I am going to change my laundry detergent and baby wash tomorrow and see if it makes any difference. The doctor seems to think it is heat related. But with my luck and doctors at the moment who knows!!!

hi i`ve been looking on the internet for a rash similar to my son`s, it looks alot like your little ones, he`s two and it looks to me like a heat rash, im a little worried as i took him to the docs and they told me its not a common virus but yet doesnt know what it is. he has had a heat rash more or less from being a baby but this is the first time its come up this red and angry looking, it seems to be itchy sometimes and have used calamine cream but other than that he seems to be happy enough. is there anything you could suggest what it could be or something i could give him. the doctor also said if its still there after 3 week to see a dermatologist, thanks
