White-necked Jacobin Hummingbird
Most recent comment: Saturday, January 23rd, 2010 at 13:19:00
When I came back from Costa Rica, I discovered they have way more than the two species you see Vancouver so I dubbed this "Blue Headed Hummingbird". The internet showed me the error of my ways.
Species: Florisuga mellivora (White-necked Jacobin)

this is a white necked jacobin - - - not a blue headed HB

Alex MacKenzie From Canada by Land 22d July 1793
Most recent comment: Saturday, October 31st, 2009 at 04:27:03
This is as far west as Alexander Mackenzie made it on his trip across Canada. He didn't actually carve this - that was done by surveyers later.

It appears that Alexander MacKenzie beat Lewis and Clark across North America by 10 years! Well, here's to him then! Are they sure he wasn't actually an Ulster man? 'sa joke, man! Congratulations to the whole of the MacKenzie clan!

Turkey Vultures Flying By
Species: Cathartes aura (Turkey Vulture)

we have vultures that soar the valley starting at 4pm and soar for about 3 to 4 hours and always end up above the cemetary. kinda wierd huh but when you figure how they clean up road kill in the summer it is kind of cool. so where do they go in the winter?

Macau Egg Tarts
Most recent comment: Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at 04:01:44
This was in a little cafe in Macau that the taxi driver said had the best egg tarts. They were good (and warm out of the oven).

I love egg tarts. Please advise me the little cafe name if possible as I would love to try this in Macau. Thanks and best regards, Jonie.

The place you are looking for is called Margarets's Cafe e Nata. Our taxi driver said the place was run by Lord Stow's ex-wife but you can't always trust taxi drivers. The place is in a back alley in the business area of downtown.

Cleaned Evaporator Pan
Most recent comment: Sunday, October 18th, 2009 at 06:17:32

Everything needs to be cleaned before it's used to process sap.  This
pan was made by my uncle and cousin.

Hi, I am trying to make syrup with my friend from Maine. I live in Liberty Maine and have loads of tree's. What material did your uncle use to boil the sap?? Thanks for the picture, its great!

The pan is made out of stainless steel - similar to pots for the stove. I'm 100ure this is a custom made pan.

Wasabi In Uncovered Field

Some of the fields still had the covers drawn - I'm not sure what set of conditions causes the sun shades to be pulled.

I assume the ideal growing condition for this plant is some shade. Some plants can't take full sunlight or grow better if the amount of full sun is limited.

Subalpine Fleabane, Subalpine Daisy

I love when flowers really isolate like this - good luck with finding the leaves for a species identification but it does make for a nice image.

Species: Erigeron peregrinus (Subalpine Fleabane, Subalpine Daisy)

I have been looking for any aster-type flower with a green disk for over a week online, and now here this one is, smiling at me. Is there anything else you can tell me about this plant? Do you have any photos of the foliage? The only thing that I wonder about is that this is taken in July and we are in mid october here. In New Hampshire.

Taj Mahal From Mosque Side
Most recent comment: Sunday, October 11th, 2009 at 00:58:02
The towers actually lean out so seeing them lean in like this (lens distortion) is actually quite misleading.

is Taj Mahal a masjid

There is a Mosque (Masjid) at the site, but the principal building in this photo is a tomb. There is a second building that looks like the Mosque on the other side of the tomb, but it isn't functional - it is used to keep the scene symmetric.

Huge Sign
Most recent comment: Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 at 20:45:06

We were told that each yellow sign is a "conversation bar" where you talk to "interested women"
and pay $100 for a glass of Whiskey. We didn't find out if that was true.

Out of curiosity, where was this located? Sounds like a bunch of Hostess bars to me.

Combined Fireworks over Vancouver
Most recent comment: Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 at 05:43:06

This shot is a longer exposure that combines a few different bursts.  Because the bright ones
are blue (which aren't very bright) it didn't overwhelm the film.

Hey John! Great photos! Granville bridge looks like one of the best places to view the fireworks. Also looks fantastic from further northeast at Fraser Heights. Good job!

Tokyo Tower
Most recent comment: Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 at 15:20:44

Welcome to Tokyo!  The Tokyo tower was a few blocks behind our hotel.  When we arrived
we were a little time confused (it was early in the morning for us, early evening in Japan) so we
went for a walk to try and stay awake.

In Smith's Paradise.  I have no idea what the name of the plant is,
but it looks a lot like a weed that grows in BC.

Looks like a Mandeville vine. Lovely. Kauai is paradise on earth.

Can you tell I like Steve McCurry's work?
